A 21-year-old lifeguard was injured after a lifeguard tower collapsed at a beach in Nea Iraklitsa, in the Kavala region of northern Greece, amid strong winds and severe weather conditions.
The woman was immediately transferred to Kavala General Hospital, where she received first aid and remains hospitalized for precautionary reasons.
According to an update from the Kavala Central Port Authority, lifeguard towers fell on several beaches in the area on Friday, including Nea Iraklitsa, “Glastries” beach in Palio, Kalamitsa and Perigiali in Kavala.
Investigation launched after weather-related damage
The collapses were caused by powerful winds that affected the region, according to authorities.
The Kavala Central Port Authority has launched a preliminary investigation into the incident to examine the circumstances surrounding the damage.
