Greece will enjoy summer-like conditions on Thursday, with sunshine and above-average temperatures across most areas, before a temporary change in weather brings rain, thunderstorms and a slight drop in temperatures from Friday.
The unstable weather pattern is expected to continue into Saturday, while conditions will gradually improve from Sunday, with more periods of sunshine returning across the country.
Sunny and warm conditions on Thursday
Thursday will be mostly clear across Greece, with plenty of sunshine in most regions. However, temporary clouds are expected to develop during the midday and afternoon hours over mainland areas, bringing local showers or brief rain, while isolated thunderstorms may occur in mountainous areas.
During the night, similar weather phenomena are expected to return in parts of western and central Macedonia, with local showers and rain.
Winds will remain relatively mild, blowing from western directions in the Ionian Sea and from northern directions in the Aegean Sea, reaching 2 to 4 Beaufort and locally up to 5 Beaufort in the Aegean.
Temperatures will rise slightly, especially in mainland areas. Most regions will see highs between 29°C and 32°C, while parts of eastern mainland Greece may reach 33°C to 35°C.
Weather forecast for Athens and Thessaloniki
In Athens, conditions will remain mostly sunny throughout Thursday. Temperatures will range between 20°C and 33°C, with light and variable winds.
In Thessaloniki, sunny weather is also expected, although temporary clouds may develop during the warmer hours of the day. Local showers or brief rain are possible, mainly in nearby mountainous areas. Temperatures will range from 19°C to 31°C.
Rain and thunderstorms expected from Friday
The weather will change from Friday, June 12, as atmospheric instability increases and brings more widespread rain and thunderstorms to several parts of Greece.
The first weather systems will affect Macedonia before gradually spreading to other mainland regions and the northern Aegean. Rain and thunderstorms may become locally stronger at times, while improvement is expected from the afternoon in western areas.
Most Greek islands will remain mostly sunny, with only temporary cloud increases.
Winds will strengthen gradually, reaching 6 Beaufort and locally 7 Beaufort in the seas. Temperatures will fall slightly, mainly in western, central and northern Greece, with highs mostly between 28°C and 30°C. Eastern mainland areas, the Dodecanese islands and Crete may still reach 31°C to 33°C.
Unstable conditions continue on Saturday
On Saturday, June 13, increased cloud cover with rain is expected in eastern mainland areas, Evia, the Sporades islands, the northern Aegean islands and Crete.
Scattered thunderstorms are expected mainly in the northwestern Aegean, particularly around the Sporades, with gradual improvement later in the day.
Elsewhere, sunny periods will dominate at first, but clouds may develop during the afternoon over mainland areas, bringing local showers and isolated thunderstorms in mountainous regions.
Northern winds will strengthen to 4-6 Beaufort, locally reaching 7 Beaufort in the seas. Temperatures will fall slightly, especially in eastern areas, returning closer to seasonal averages.
Sunshine returns from Sunday
On Sunday, June 14, weather conditions will improve, with plenty of sunshine expected across most of Greece.
Some instability may remain over mainland areas, mainly in mountainous locations during the warmer hours of the day.
Winds will gradually weaken, while temperatures will rise slightly again, especially in western and northern parts of the country.
