Greek port authorities have banned swimming and all maritime activity within a 100-meter radius of a site in the Ardani coastal area of the island of Karpathos, after objects believed to be old munitions were discovered in the water.
The Karpathos Port Authority has cordoned off the area and imposed restrictions as a precautionary safety measure. The ban prohibits bathing, the presence of swimmers on the beach, and the movement and anchoring of vessels and recreational watercraft in the designated zone. All other activities in the affected area are also prohibited.
Authorities believe the objects are old munitions, according to the state news agency ANA-MPA. The restrictions will remain in force until further notice, and both members of the public and vessel operators are urged to keep clear of the demarcated area. Violators will be subject to penalties under the Public Maritime Law Code.
