The death of a 16-year-old teenage girl who passed out in front of a downtown Athens nightclub in the early morning hours of Sunday is now under police investigation.

The tragic incident was disclosed on Wednesday and quickly generated headlines in news websites.

According to reports, the victim exited a club in the Gazi district at around 2 a.m. and promptly collapsed. She was taken by ambulance to the Evangelismos Hospital, where she was pronounced DOA.

The teen’s father subsequent filed a lawsuit at the police precinct (Omonia Square) with jurisdiction over the specific district, including the death certificate in the suit.

An investigation was commenced by a special police unit tasked with investigating crimes against minors, with officers arriving at the specific club and taking samples from bottles and seizing other evidence. An autopsy and toxicology report was also ordered to determine if the victim had consumed any legal or illegal substances that caused her death, as well as the possibility of adulterated alcohol involved.

Later on Wednesday evening, media reports claimed that a massive heart attack was the cause of death, while reports stated that the teen had consumed vodka in at least two clubs that evening. Serving alcohol to individuals under the age of 18 is illegal in Greece.

The incident has attracted media attention due to suspicions that the teen may have illegally been served alcohol inside one or more nightclubs in Gazi, a well-known entertainment hub in central Athens.
