Thessaloniki Attack: Father of ND Official Released from Hospital

Father and neighbor discharged after Wednesday's arson attacks; Nestora remains hospitalized

Panagiotis Nestoras, father of New Democracy politician Afroditi Nestora, was discharged Friday along with fellow patient Giorgos Papadopoulos from the pulmonology department of Ippokrateio Hospital in Thessaloniki, following the arson attacks early Wednesday. Both had been treated for smoke inhalation and breathing difficultie. Hospital officials confirmed their conditions had fully stabilized.

Speaking to reporters as he left the hospital, Nestoras described the ordeal as devastating for him and his family. He said he lost his daughter five years ago and now his wife as well, calling those behind the attack sick-minded criminals who acted without considering the pain they would cause.

He added that he wished no family would have to endure something similar, and expressed hope that the perpetrators would be caught and judged fairly through the justice system.

Nestoras had been hospitalized for breathing difficulties immediately after the attack. He voiced hope that his wife would be the last victim of what he called cowardly, underhanded violence.

Afroditi Nestora herself has been hospitalized since yesterday afternoon in the burn unit of Papanikolaou Hospital, having suffered burns to her hands and legs from an explosive device attack on the apartment building where she lives.

Sources say her condition is good, with no respiratory issues, and she is expected to be discharged next week.
