A 77-year-old woman was temporarily detained in Thessaloniki, northern Greece, on suspicion of murdering her husband, 82, after presenting her defense before the local judge.

The woman, who categorically denies she was implicated in her spouse’s death, faces charges of intentional homicide, pleading innocent during the arraignment procedure.

Police suspected the woman might be involved following a forensic investigation that determined the victim’s body, which was found by police last Saturday at his home, had signs of premortem injuries to his ribs.

Forensic officers estimated that the injuries contributed to the man suffering an ischemic stroke, which resulted in his demise.

The 77-year-old woman has given her own account to police, denying the charge against her.

“I do not accept the accusation. I woke up at 5:00 a.m. and had coffee. I swept the building’s ground-floor area, cleaned my room and then rested. Around 11:00 a.m. I went to the market in Koufalia, where I bought shoes and earrings. I returned home at 11:30 and did not go out again,” she said.

She maintained that she did not realize when or how her husband collapsed, initially assuming the 82-year-old was asleep.
