A serious traffic accident occurred Friday afternoon, Aug. 14, near the entrance to the Preveza-Aktion underwater tunnel in northwestern Greece, after a truck apparently crashed into several cars, injuring passengers.
According to local news outlet EpirusPost, traffic through the tunnel had been temporarily halted after another vehicle suffered a mechanical failure inside. Three cars with foreign license plates were consequently waiting near the tunnel entrance.
Under circumstances that remain under investigation, the truck was unable to stop in time and struck the first vehicle in the line at speed. The force of the impact triggered a chain-reaction crash, leaving the passenger vehicles severely damaged.
Three people became trapped inside the wreckage and required immediate assistance from a large force of firefighters, who worked to free them from the crushed vehicles.
A total of eight people — four men, two women and two children — were taken by ambulance to Preveza Hospital, according to the same local outlet.
The crash and resulting traffic closure caused long lines of vehicles to form in the area.
