A video on TikTok posted by a Turkish influencer, showing him eating a meal at a Greek taverna, has caused a mini “firestorm” of comments on the man’s account.

In the video, Hakan Ozturk describes paying 22.5 euros for a Greek salad, a portion of zucchini, a portion of anchovies and the spirit ouzo.

“What do you think about food prices in Greece?” he asks his followers in the video, with an “avalanche” of comments following, mostly in Turkish but also by non-Turks.

“It doesn’t seem right to me for you to give our money to the Greeks,”… “if you want it for free… it doesn’t taste the same as the food in Turkey,”… “22.5 euros isn’t cheap,”… “the fish you ate is of the cheapest,”… “it’s a matter of choice, I wouldn’t buy it and I wouldn’t want to give them money,” were some of more negative comments that Ozturk’s video attracted.

At the same time, however, there were several users who criticized the economic situation in Turkey, writing that “once in Turkey it used to be cheaper, but now prices have tripled”.

Several users – including ones that are apparently Greek – congratulated him on his choice to visit the neighboring country, instead of holidaying in Turkey, while wishing him a “pleasant stay”.
