Μake us preferred on Google Two teenagers are in critical condition after separate electric scooter accidents in Greece over recent days, renewing concerns over the safety of e-scooters and enforcement of a new ban on their use by minors.
A 16-year-old teen boy was seriously injured late Saturday in Glyka Nera, northeast of Athens proper, when the electric scooter he was riding was struck by a car driven by a 19-year-old. The youth was thrown onto the pavement and suffered multiple head and body injuries. He underwent surgery and remains intubated in intensive care an Athens hospital.
The 19-year-old driver underwent alcohol and toxicology tests, both of which were negative. His family claims the teenager riding the scooter failed to stop and was traveling at high speed. The 16-year-old riding the scooter was not wearing a helmet.
In a separate incident on the Cyclades island of Tinos, a 14-year-old teen girl remains in critical condition after falling from an electric scooter while riding as a passenger. She suffered severe head injuries, was intubated at the island’s health center and later transferred to Athens, where she underwent surgery and was admitted to intensive care.
The two incidents come despite legislation introduced in late July banning minors under 17 from riding electric scooters. The measure followed mounting concern over injuries involving minors.
More than 300 minors were reportedly treated in Greek hospitals for e-scooter injuries during the first six months of 2026, according to an organization representing healthcare staff in public hospitals (POEDIN). In 2025, around 400 minors were hospitalized following e-scooter accidents, with head injuries accounting for roughly one-third of reported cases.
Earlier this year, a series of serious incidents involving children included a 12-year-old boy critically injured in the Aspropyrgos township and a 14-year-old who required intensive care after a crash on the island of Corfu.
The continuing accidents have raised questions over enforcement of the new age restriction, helmet use and the ability of authorities to prevent minors from accessing e-scooters. Measures under consideration have included mandatory helmets, insurance, rider training and restrictions on where e-scooters can be used.
