A man was arrested after a fire caused by negligence burned part of an olive grove near the Greek city of Volos, authorities said on Thursday.
The incident occurred on May 27 in the Nees Pagases area, where the fire reportedly broke out during grass-clearing work carried out with a brush cutter equipped with a metal blade.
According to the Fire Service, emergency crews responded quickly and managed to contain the blaze before it spread to neighboring land.
The fire burned approximately 3,000 square meters — of dry vegetation within the olive grove.
Following an investigation by fire authorities, the man responsible was arrested under Greece’s fast-track legal procedure for offenses committed in the act. Prosecutors were informed of the case, while an administrative fine of €1,933.59 was imposed.
Greek fire investigation units said they remain on heightened operational alert, carrying out inspections and enforcing fire prevention regulations.
Authorities also revealed that between January 1 and May 28, 2026, a total of 347 administrative fines amounting to more than €286,000 have been imposed nationwide for fire-related violations. During the same period, 58 people were arrested under expedited legal procedures linked to similar incidents.
