Work is underway at the White Tower, with the area around Thessaloniki’s iconic monument temporarily turned into a worksite for the installation of new architectural lighting.
Preparatory work has already begun, and for safety reasons, the area around the White Tower must remain cordoned off while the work is carried out.
“The area around the White Tower must be closed off for safety reasons,” Tania Protopsalti, head of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Thessaloniki, explained to thestival.gr.
Three Weeks of Work
The work is expected to last about three weeks and aims not just to light up the White Tower but to better highlight its distinctive architectural features.
The project is part of a broader effort to give the most important monuments along Thessaloniki’s historic waterfront a unified lighting identity.
As a result, the project is not limited to the White Tower but also includes highlighting Thessaloniki’s Byzantine walls.
The overall plan also covers major sections of the city’s fortifications, including the Trigonion area and the Heptapyrgion.
The goal of the new lighting is to bring out the details of the monuments while also creating a more cohesive nighttime image of Thessaloniki’s historic landscape.
