A wildfire that broke out on Wednesday afternoon in the coastal area of Vourvourou in Halkidiki is now under control, according to local officials. The fire, which had sparked serious concern among residents and visitors alike, was partially contained by nightfall, thanks to a large-scale firefighting effort.

Massive Response Brings Blaze Under Control

As reported by local authorities, the firefighting response was swift and extensive. Over 140 firefighters were deployed to the area, supported by seven ground task forces and 35 fire engines. Aerial support included 14 aircraft and five helicopters that operated until 9:30 p.m. to perform water drops over the fire front.

Unmanned aerial vehicles were also used to monitor the situation from above, while local municipal services contributed with water trucks and earth-moving equipment. Dozens of volunteers assisted on the ground in efforts to protect the forested region and nearby settlements.

Despite the progress made, strong firefighting forces remained on alert through the night in case of flare-ups.

Evacuations and Precautionary Measures

Authorities took no chances with public safety. Residents of Vourvourou were ordered to evacuate, and emergency alerts were issued via Greece’s 112 warning system.

Particularly concerning was the need to evacuate summer camps in the area. Out of caution, children were moved to safety and spent the night on the beach under supervision, away from the fire-affected zones.

Local deputy mayor of Sithonia, the municipality overseeing the area, confirmed via social media that the situation had improved by late evening and thanked both emergency services and citizens for their cooperation.

A Night of Vigilance

While the fire has now been contained, the region remains under close observation. Emergency teams continue to patrol the area for potential rekindling, especially as high summer temperatures and dry conditions persist across northern Greece.
