The Greek island of Karpathos, the second largest of the Greek Dodecanese islands, located in the southeastern Aegean Sea, features in the popular Swedish site “Bucket List” with the title “Welcome to My Greece.”
The piece highlights the fact that the island preserved its authenticity, avoiding the mass tourism stereotypes, writing its unique features and feel “cannot be captured by conventional travel guides.”
The feature focuses on local hospitality, dramatic landscapes, traditional communities and visitors’ connection with local culture. It highlights elements that distinguish Karpathos from other Mediterranean destinations, describing the island as offering an “authentic Greek atmosphere,” where traditions, daily life and hospitality remain central to local identity.
The article also highlights the island’s natural landscapes, beaches and clear waters, while pointing to opportunities for outdoor activities including hiking, windsurfing and diving.
Particular attention is given to the mountain village of Olympos, perched along a mountain ridge, where women continue to bake bread in traditional wood-fired ovens while wearing customary local dress. “This is not a spectacle staged for visitors; it is simply an ordinary day in village life,” the feature says.
According to ANA-MPA, Olympos is among the few places in Europe where women have traditionally played a central role in preserving family structures, customs and local linguistic traditions. Despite changes over time, the village’s character has remained largely intact, the publication says, citing handmade bread from stone ovens, evening lyre music and mountain scenery among its defining features.
