City breaks have become one of Europe’s favorite travel trends, offering a quick escape from everyday life in just a few days. But as living costs rise, even a short getaway can strain budgets if expenses aren’t carefully planned.

Each year, Post Office Travel Money’s City Costs Barometer compares the cost of short breaks across 50 European destinations, assessing accommodation, dining, transport, and attractions to identify where travelers can get the best value for their money.

This year, Sarajevo in Bosnia and Herzegovina emerges as Europe’s most affordable city-break destination. A short stay costs an estimated €287 for two people, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious travelers. The city’s top ranking is driven by reasonably priced accommodation, inexpensive public transport, and affordable attractions, securing its position as the best-value destination for 2026.

Close behind is Bucharest, Romania, where visitors can enjoy elegant boulevards, a wide range of activities, and excellent food and drink at accessible prices. A short break in the Romanian capital comes in at around €300.
