As autumn drapes Greece‘s forests in gold, the season offers ideal conditions for short breaks — from single-day outings near Athens to fuller weekend trips further afield.

In mountainous Corinthia, Lake Doxa stands out as a standout destination just two and a half hours from Athens. Sitting 900 meters above sea level near ancient Feneos, the artificial lake is anchored by the small chapel of Agios Fanourios at its center. Visitors can hike, cycle or ride horseback around its shores year-round.
Nearby, the villages of Vytina, Dimitsana and Stemnitsa in mountainous Arcadia remain seasonal favorites for their autumn scenery.
Further west, in Achaia, Lake Tsivlou offers a quieter draw: walking trails wind around the water, forgotten paths await discovery, and canoeing is a popular activity on the lake itself.
On the slopes behind Parnassos, the village of Eptalofo (Agoriani) — 24 kilometers from Arachova — provides a budget-friendly base for exploring the mountain, prized for its quiet streets, plane-tree square, chestnut and walnut groves, fir forest and waterfall.

Nearby, the Oiti mountain refuge sits at 1,240 meters, roughly 240 kilometers from Athens, while the village of Pavliani, three hours from the capital, is a favorite for families thanks to its riverside park at the springs of the Asopos, complete with playgrounds, hammocks and even an Iron Throne replica at 1,260 meters.

Closer to Athens, options abound for a weekend without leaving Attica. Gaidourochora offers hands-on donkey-care programs for children, Mount Ymittos provides accessible hiking half an hour from the city center, the Mpafi mountain refuge is a 40-minute drive with home-cooked meals and sweeping views, and Lake Beletsi on Parnitha’s eastern slopes is reachable in under an hour.
