The man was arrested the same day following a police operation at an apartment in the inner-city Kato Patisia district of central Athens, where he had been living in hiding. He had been wanted in connection with the double homicide, as well as convictions for robbery and arson.
The murders in Loutraki took place on the night of Oct. 10-11, 2020, at a holiday home in the Flambouro area. The victims were a 43-year-old woman, with whom the suspect had previously been in a relationship, and her 42-year-old partner, a pharmacist. The suspect allegedly broke into the property and attacked both with an axe, inflicting fatal injuries.
He subsequently took money and jewelry from the house before moving the woman’s car to an isolated location and setting it on fire in an apparent attempt to destroy evidence.
He reportedly fled to Albania after the killings.
Weapons found in Athens hideout
The suspect was located following information gathered by Greek Police’s organized crime unit. The operation, conducted with the assistance of the police special forces unit and in the presence of a prosecutor, led to his arrest.
Police found a silver handgun with a wooden grip and two fully operational hand grenades, complete with detonators, beside his bed. Three pairs of metal handcuffs and a residence permit belonging to another person but bearing the suspect’s photograph were also discovered in the apartment.
He faces additional charges involving violence against public officials and judicial personnel, forgery and violations of firearms and immigration law.
A 41-year-old foreign national was also arrested on suspicion of harboring a criminal and violating immigration laws.
International notices
Meanwhile, authorities said Interpol and Albanian law enforcement agencies have established that the suspect was also wanted internationally in connection with an attempted armed robbery.
Police are examining his wider criminal activities and whether he was preparing further offenses. His previous record included cases involving drugs, robberies, firearms violations, traffic offenses and illegal gambling.
The two suspects were brought before the competent prosecutor following their arrest. The investigation into the additional alleged killings in Albania is continuing.
