A rise in crime on public transportation has been recorded in recent months, with incidents including theft, drug trafficking, possession of knives and weapons, as well as damage to public property. The situation appears to be reaching worrying levels, according to a report by MEGA TV.
The station’s camera was at the metro station in Omonia, where police officers carry out daily checks as part of intensified operations aimed at ensuring the safety of passengers and staff.
During these checks, passengers were found carrying dangerous items such as axes and swords. In particular, in Kato Patisia, a passenger was carrying an axe and a knife, while in Kato Acharnes, a minor was found with a replica katana-style sword. At the Panormou station, a man was reportedly approaching tourists and creating artificial crowding so that accomplices could steal money.
Since early 2025, the operational plan “Ariadne” has been in effect, involving the daily presence of more than 400 police officers on buses, metro lines, trains and trams, aiming to prevent and combat crime on public transport.
