The Central Council of Jews in Germany has called for an end to the war in Gaza and the immediate securing of access to humanitarian aid, urging Israel to take responsibility for the civilian population in the enclave.

“The Israeli government must accept that it also has responsibility for the civilian population in Gaza — this includes allowing the provision of aid,” said Dr. Josef Schuster, president of the Central Council, in an interview with the German newspaper Tagesspiegel.

Schuster reiterated that the fight against Hamas is essential for Israel’s security but emphasized that the war must come to an end. He stressed the release of the hostages is the key to everything, echoing the recent remarks of Israeli President Isaac Herzog during his visit to Berlin.

Meanwhile, the organization Doctors Without Borders has accused Israel of creating conditions for “a deliberate humanitarian catastrophe” in the Gaza Strip. The NGO alleged that the Israeli state was attempting to link the delivery of aid to Palestinian territories with the forced displacement of Gaza’s residents. “We are witnessing the creation of conditions for the uprooting of Palestinians from Gaza,” the organization said in a statement.

Israeli airstrikes killed 80 people on May 14, according to the Palestinian Civil Defense. The Civil Defense spokesperson told Agence France-Presse that this number included 59 individuals who were killed in bombings in the northern part of the Palestinian enclave.
