Severe winter weather has brought large parts of the Netherlands to a standstill, as heavy snowfall disrupted air, rail and road transport across the country. Authorities have urged residents to limit travel and remain at home where possible, warning that conditions remain hazardous.
At least 500 flights were cancelled at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport, one of Europe’s busiest hubs. The airport was closed to incoming flights until early afternoon due to snow accumulation, while aircraft bound for Amsterdam were diverted to other airports. Schiphol had already been cancelling hundreds of flights daily since Friday because of snowfall and freezing temperatures.
Rail services were also severely affected. The national railway operator announced that no trains were running in the wider Amsterdam area, with public transport disruptions reported in several other regions. Commuters faced widespread cancellations and delays, further compounding travel difficulties.
Road conditions deteriorated rapidly as snow and ice covered major routes, leading to traffic delays and accidents. Despite repeated warnings from authorities to avoid unnecessary travel, many areas experienced significant congestion.
According to forecasts, snowfall is expected to continue throughout the week, raising concerns that transport disruptions may persist.
