A new spell of bad weather began moving across Greece on Friday, with rain and thunderstorms spreading from the west to most of the country and expected to intensify over the weekend, the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY) said.
Conditions are largely fair on Friday morning, but clouds are forecast to build from midday. Rain and local storms will first hit the Ionian islands, Epirus and western and central Sterea Ellada before reaching western and central Macedonia, Thessaly and the western Peloponnese. By evening, rain is expected across more of Macedonia and Thessaly.
Temperatures will reach 24 to 26 degrees Celsius in most areas and up to 27 C in parts of the Dodecanese. Attica will range from 15 to 26 C and Thessaloniki from 14 to 25 C.
On Saturday, the system will cover a larger part of the country, centered on the Ionian and much of the mainland, before moving east and south. Rain and storms are also forecast for the Cyclades and Crete, and rain is expected in Attica during the day.
Sunday is expected to be the worst day, with storms concentrated in the eastern and southern mainland and coastal areas. Locally intense conditions are possible on Evia and the Sporades. Northerly winds will reach force 7 on the Beaufort scale, while temperatures remain at autumn levels.
