An Ode to the Mediterranean Through Songs in Different Languages at the Theatre of the NO

New Greek jazz generation Spyros Manesis joins iconic vocalist Savina Yannatou in an improvised musical dialogue celebrating Greek composers and Mediterranean songs in multiple dialects at the Theatre of the NO on January 11

Despite weather forecasts pointing to colder, more wintry conditions across Greece, the stage of the Theatre of the NO is set to offer warmth and escape this Sunday, January 11. Internationally acclaimed vocalist Savina Yannatou and jazz pianist Spyros Manesis come together for a concert that promises to transport audiences across the Mediterranean through song, sound and improvisation.

Under the title Seathrough, the project brings together traditional Mediterranean songs performed in different languages and dialects alongside compositions by Greek creators. At its core is a live, improvisational dialogue between two artists from different musical generations, exploring the coexistence of diverse musical worlds through shared expression.

Savina Yannatou, one of Greece’s most internationally recognised voices, has collaborated with leading composers in Greece and abroad, while also composing music for theatre and cinema. In the 1990s, she turned decisively towards ethnic music with the ensemble Primavera en Salonico, performing at major festivals worldwide. She has since become known for her ability to bridge Mediterranean musical traditions with contemporary and experimental forms.

Her album Watersong, a global journey through traditional songs inspired by water, created in collaboration with Primavera en Salonico and Tunisian singer Lamia Bedioui, was praised by The Guardian as a “Folk Album of the Month”. In recent years, Yannatou has also been an active presence on the international free jazz scene, seamlessly combining free improvisation with a wide range of musical genres.

Spyros Manesis represents the new generation of Greek jazz musicians. A pianist and composer, he studied classical and jazz piano in Athens and at the Conservatory of Amsterdam. His career includes appearances at festivals and concerts across Europe, America and Asia, as well as collaborations with prominent musicians and orchestras.

As a soloist, Manesis has performed with symphonic and contemporary orchestras in Greece and abroad. He is a founding member of the Spiral Trio, with which he has released two albums and represented Greece at the Athens Jazz Festival in 2023. As a bandleader, he has released six albums on international record labels and currently teaches jazz piano at the Jazzart School and at the Department of Music Studies of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.
