With the Saronic Gulf as a backdrop and waves accompanying every strike of the chisel, Glyfada’s third marina has turned into an open-air art studio. The 1st Glyfada Sculpture Symposium, an initiative of the Municipality of Glyfada, gives visitors a rare chance to watch a work of art come to life in real time.

Through July 20, at the far end of the marina next to the Glyfada Festival grounds, five well-known sculptors, Stefanos Souvatzoglou, Konstantinos Kaisaris, Dimitris Kostas, Stelios Panagiotopoulos, and Stelios Gavalas, are working daily on large blocks of marble, shaping raw stone into pieces meant to become local landmarks for the city.

The symposium features distinguished artists Stefanos Souvatzoglou, Konstantinos Kaisaris, Dimitris Kostas, Stelios Panagiotopoulos, and Stelios Gavalas, who are essentially opening their workshop to the public, allowing visitors to see the sculpting process from the first cut to the finished work.

The project goes beyond artistic creation. Organizers hope to bring art closer to residents, highlight the value of public sculpture, and leave a lasting cultural mark on Glyfada.

Once finished, the works will be handed over to the municipality and placed at selected spots around the city, adding contemporary sculpture to public spaces that residents and visitors can enjoy daily.

The symposium shows that culture doesn’t have to stay behind museum walls. At the marina, the creative process unfolds in the open, turning marble into art and a seaside spot into a cultural meeting point.

A visit to the outdoor workshop offers a memorable experience for all ages, a reminder that art gains extra meaning when it’s created in public, as part of the life of the city.
