The stunning city of Kalamata, nestled in the southwestern Peloponnese, has become the center of attention as Hollywood descends on Greece. Award-winning actor Matt Damon is in the country to take on the iconic role of Odysseus in Odyssey, a grand-scale production directed by the acclaimed Christopher Nolan.

One of the key filming locations is Almyrolakas Beach in Pylos, which has been transformed into a Hollywood-style set. In just a few days, Damon will step into the role of the legendary Ithacan king, shooting a pivotal scene alongside shepherds under Nolan’s direction.

Another breathtaking location, the cave at Voidokilia, will serve as the setting for Odysseus’ harrowing encounter with the fearsome Cyclops Polyphemus. The mythical one-eyed giant, the son of Poseidon and the nymph Thoosa, plays a crucial role in Homer’s epic tale.

Earlier this week, Damon shared his excitement about being in Greece: “I feel amazing here; I love it. This isn’t my first time—I’ve been here many times. But this time, it’s for an incredible film.”

With a staggering budget of $250 million, the film promises to be a visually stunning adaptation of Homer’s epic, following Odysseus’ arduous journey home after the Trojan War.

The Hollywood presence in Greece has been growing, with Tom Holland also arriving in the country to portray Telemachus, Odysseus’ son. The young actor has been spotted exploring Pylos and the historic Methoni Castle alongside Damon.

Adding to the star-studded cast, Charlize Theron is set to portray the enchantress Circe, whose fateful encounter with Odysseus is a highlight of the epic.

Speaking about the impact of the production, Panagiotis Karvelas, Mayor of Pylos-Nestor, emphasized the significance of hosting such a major Hollywood project: “The arrival of these stars for the filming of Odyssey is not just an honor for our region but a tribute to the immortal spirit of Greek culture.”
