Now in its third decade, the festival pays tribute to the powerful geological forces that shaped the Cycladic island into one of the world’s most recognizable landscapes. The event features a series of activities highlighting Santorini’s geology, history, and the enduring influence of volcanic activity on the island’s culture and identity.
The festival’s highlight is a spectacular fireworks display designed to recreate the dramatic volcanic eruption that formed Santorini’s famous caldera thousands of years ago. The annual spectacle, which draws visitors from around the world, illuminates the island’s cliffs in a celebration of its extraordinary natural history.
Founded in 1991, the Santorini Volcano Festival has become one of the island’s signature cultural events, showcasing both its geological significance and its global appeal.
Santorini itself was formed entirely through volcanic activity and remains part of an active geological system. Recently, heightened seismic and volcanic activity prompted increased monitoring by authorities and scientists, drawing international attention to the island’s volcanic complex.
In fact, a recent scientific study estimated a 13% probability of volcanic unrest leading to an eruption within the next five years, rising to approximately 25% over the next decade.
Organizers are putting the finishing touches on the 2026 edition of the festival, with the full program of accompanying cultural events expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
