Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi is in Greece on Wednesday for a series of high-level meetings aimed at deepening the strategic relationship between Athens and Cairo. He will first meet with President of the Hellenic Republic Konstantinos Tasoulas before proceeding to Maximos Mansion at 11:20 a.m. for a meeting with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
According to government sources, the visit underscores Greece and Egypt’s commitment to establishing themselves as pillars of stability in the Eastern Mediterranean amid ongoing geopolitical challenges. Following the meetings in Athens, el-Sisi will depart for Cyprus, which is part of the Greece-Cyprus-Egypt tripartite.
A pivotal component of today’s visit to Greece will be the inaugural plenary session of the Supreme Council of Cooperation between Greece and Egypt. Government officials have described the session as a landmark in the bilateral relationship, as the two leaders are expected to outline plans to elevate their already close ties to a Strategic Partnership.
The anticipated Joint Declaration by Mitsotakis and el-Sisi will highlight areas of cooperation and coordination, including political mechanisms, trade and investment, infrastructure, connectivity projects, energy security — particularly the Greece-Egypt GREGY interconnector — as well as climate change, defense and security, migration, education, and culture.
The declaration is also expected to underscore alignment based on International Law in addressing regional challenges and promoting stability in the Eastern Mediterranean. Discussions between the two leaders will include recent developments in Gaza, Syria, and Libya.
The last official meeting between Mitsotakis and el-Sisi occurred in January 2025 during the Greece-Cyprus-Egypt trilateral summit in Cairo. Additionally, in March 2024, Mitsotakis visited Cairo alongside European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to sign the EU-Egypt Strategic Partnership Agreement, which was strongly advocated by Greece given Egypt’s crucial role in regional stability and curbing migration flows.
The March 2024 Joint Declaration between Mitsotakis and el-Sisi laid the groundwork for establishing the Supreme Council of Cooperation, the first session of which will take place in Athens on Wednesday.
