European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen made special reference to the Greece-Egypt electricity interconnection project (GREGY Project), during her speech at the Summit on the Future of Energy Security, held in London on April 24, 2025. She emphasized the project’s importance for the energy security of both Europe and Africa.
The interconnection is part of the broader European infrastructure development strategy aimed at diversifying energy sources and linking energy markets through cross-border projects.
Greece is positioned to become a key entry point for energy imports into Europe through the GREGY project. As President von der Leyen stated, “We are also helping to develop
a connection between Greece and Egypt. These projects will help enhance energy security across both our continents.”
Her remarks underline the strategic significance of the GREGY project and reinforce Greece’s role as Europe’s energy gateway for the import of clean energy from North Africa.
The Greece-Egypt electricity interconnection project connects the electric power systems of Egypt and Europe through Greece for the transfer of 100% clean energy produced from renewable energy sources in Egypt, capturing the high-capacity factors in the area, which will be used for consumption by the Greek industry, for the production of green H2 in the country, and for export to European countries.
