Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias met with the Indian ambassador to the country, Ravi Shankar, at the ministry on Thursday for talks on security challenges in the wider region and prospects for further strengthening bilateral defense cooperation.
The meeting follows a series of high-level contacts between Athens and New Delhi.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met in New Delhi in February on the sidelines of the India AI Impact Summit, reaffirming the strategic partnership between the two countries and discussing defense, infrastructure, technology and connectivity. Greece has also expressed interest in playing a role in the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC).
Defense cooperation has become an increasingly important component of the relationship. In February, Dendias said conditions were favorable for cooperation with India in defense innovation and advanced technologies, while Indian and Greek naval forces have conducted joint training in the eastern Mediterranean. Indian naval vessels have also made port calls in Greece.
The two countries are simultaneously seeking to expand economic ties, with Greek and Indian officials highlighting opportunities in trade, infrastructure, logistics, technology and investment. Athens has promoted Greece as a potential gateway for Indian companies seeking access to the European market.
Ravi Shankar.
