Traffic Restrictions in Downtown Athens Ahead of Rubio Visit

Police will impose extensive security measures on Wednesday, including a ban on public gatherings and motorized marches

Authorities in Athens will impose extensive traffic restrictions and heightened security measures across the center of the Greek capital on Wednesday to coincide with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio visit for the sixth Greece-US Strategic Dialogue.

Public outdoor gatherings and motorized marches will be banned from 6 a.m. Wednesday until 6 a.m. Thursday in a wider area of central Athens, while thousands of law enforcement personnel will be deployed, supported by drones monitoring the area from the air.

Authorities said the measures are intended to prevent serious threats to public safety and major disruption to socioeconomic activity during the visit.

Police said efforts would be made to minimize inconvenience for residents and visitors, with Athens Metro stations closed only for short periods when strictly necessary. The Evangelismos station, for instance, is expected to remain open because of the nearby Evangelismos Hospital.
