Shock has gripped Igoumenitsa in northwestern Greece following the murder of a 25-year-old woman at the hands of her former partner on Sunday night. The 27-year-old suspect confessed to the killing, claiming that the couple had been involved in a heated argument and that he “lost control.”
The brutal murder came to light when the young woman was found dead on a bike path with knife wounds to her neck and legs. The suspect was found nearby with chest wounds.
Initially, the 27-year-old claimed that they had been attacked by a group of four masked individuals, who injured them both before fleeing the scene. However, his statements contained contradictions which immediately raised suspicions among police. During questioning by authorities, he eventually confessed that he had committed the murder.
The young man reportedly confessed that the killing followed a heated argument over financial differences between them. “She owed me €2,000,” he reportedly told police. According to his statement, he then stabbed her in the neck with a pocketknife, fatally injuring her.
He told authorities: “We had an argument, she insulted me and I lost control.”
Moreover, according to information, the injuries found on the man’s chest were self-inflicted, aimed at throwing off authorities, which he made shortly after calling the Operations Center of the Thesprotia Police Directorate.
He remains hospitalized under police guard, as one of the injuries he inflicted on himself is deeper.
According to reports, the couple had been in a relationship in the past for 2.5 years, but had broken up about a month ago. Authorities are now also examining the history of their relationship as part of the investigation into what happened before the killing.
