A light quake measuring 4.2 on the Richter scale was recorded at just before 9 p.m. (19.00 GMT) on Monday afternoon some 27 kilometers southwest of the coastal town of Paliouri, on the Kassandra peninsula in northern Greece.
The tremor was felt in the nearby city of Thessaloniki, to the west.
The quake was pinpointed at a depth of 18.4 kilometers.
A moderate earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale struck the Mount Athos peninsula – to the east of Kassandra – on Saturday, causing material damages to several of the monasteries on the semi-autonomous Orthodox monastic community. Several aftershocks followed the latter quake. Both Kassandra and Mount Athos are located in Halkidiki prefecture, east of Thessaloniki.
Earlier in the year, a veritable “seismic swarm” had affected the south Aegean, roughly between the islands of Amorgos, Ios, Santorini and Anafi.
