Fifty wildfires were reported throughout Greece in the past 24 hours, according to the fire brigade, with 39 of the blazes promptly contained, while firefighting operations are ongoing at 11 sites in the evening.
Greece annually faces the specter of catastrophic summer wildfires every season, especially in the southern half of the country and several major islands.
A wildfire at the Kinidaros site on the Cyclades Island of Naxos was still burning in the evening, with firefighting forces reinforced on Wednesday afternoon. No residential areas are under threat, with the blaze affecting brushland and some forested areas.
Meanwhile, wildfire that erupted in a remote region near the Agios Stefanos site in the southern-most prefecture of Laconia was mostly extinguished. Earlier in the day, fire was reported adjacent to the Penteli Monasteri, on the same-name mountain side overlooking Athens from the north. A major fire-fighting detachment was activated, along with the local fire brigade volunteer force, as the area has witnessed devastating fires in the past.
