Mystery surrounding the death of a 66-year-old Greek-born man from Germany in the Serres region of northern Greece has been resolved after an autopsy found that he died of natural causes.
The man was found dead inside his home in Ivera, in the Municipality of Visaltia, on Sunday afternoon. According to the forensic examination, he suffered a heart attack before being found unconscious by his niece.
Relatives released after being questioned
Two relatives who had been brought in for questioning in connection with the case have been released, according to a report by ERT. A prosecutor had ordered their temporary detention while authorities investigated the circumstances of the man’s death.
The investigation initially focused on whether his death could have been connected to an incident involving the two relatives the previous night.
Man had reported alleged assault
The 66-year-old, who was a permanent resident of Germany and was in the village on vacation, had gone to the Visaltia Police Department the night before his death and filed a complaint against the two men.
According to his complaint, the two relatives had assaulted him, prompting authorities to open a case file.
Information reported in connection with the investigation indicated that longstanding family and inheritance disputes were behind the conflict.
Just hours after filing the complaint, the 66-year-old was found dead inside his home. Authorities subsequently launched an investigation to determine whether his death was connected to the earlier confrontation.
The forensic examination ultimately determined that the cause of death was a heart attack, rather than injuries sustained in the reported altercation.
