A rescue operation was launched early on Tuesday after Greek authorities were notified than an American female tourist had fallen over 40 meters while hiking in Vikos Gorge, located in northern Greece.
The woman, was found unconscious and critically injured, and later declared dead, according to reports at ERT TV.
The victim has been identified as a 25-year-old U.S. national.
Greece’s Civil Protection and Fire Department requested a helicopter for her evacuation, which departed from Elefsina at 13:00. Despite strong winds that made the mission difficult, the helicopter managed to reach the scene and airlift the injured woman. Sadly, she succumbed to her injuries.
Around 4 p.m., the helicopter landed at the Ioannina airport, where an EKAV ambulance received the young woman’s body.
In total, 13 firefighters participated in the operation, including crews from the 2nd Ioannina Fire Station, the 5th EMAK (Special Disaster Unit), and the 5th EMODE (Special Mountain Rescue Unit), says ERT.
Vikos Gorge is the world’s deepest gorge, and is well-known for its hiking trails, majestic views and fresh springs. While many of the trails are considered easy to moderate, there are also treatcherous paths with steep cliffs and loose rock, which can complicate hiking.
