Authorities continued an intensive investigation this week into the circumstances surrounding the discovery of a body belonging to a three-year-old toddler off a southern Athens beach, as the ill-fated child’s jailed mother now faces homicide charges.
Police on Monday said the clothes worn by the dead child’s mother on the evening she was shown near the specific beach along the Paleo Faliro municipality, and when she allegedly left the body in the water, have been recovered. The clothing was recovered in a plastic bag near their residence in central Athens, along with the clothes worn by the other two small children, which were also seen in video footage.

Additionally, the investigation has now shifted to examining whether an accomplice was involved in any wrongdoing, given witnesses’ statements that the child had bruising on her face when she was last seen in public.
As a result, authorities sought and received judicial permission to open her mobile phone records.
The arrested woman, who has two other small children, is described as an Algerian national who first surfaced in Greece when she requested asylum. Press reports have the request being denied, while still other reports claim that after the child’s body was recovered, she contacted the Algerian embassy to ask how she could be repatriated.
