An unusual incident occurred off the coast of the famous Greek island of Lefkada on Wednesday when fishermen spotted a black unmanned surface vessel (USV) moving in the sea area around the island.
The drone was found near the rocky coastline and the fishermen towed it to the local port of Vasiliki to be examined by authorities.
The case has now been taken over by the Hellenic Coast Guard, with the assistance of Armed Forces personnel.
This particular USV (Unmanned Surface Vehicle) is a technology used internationally mainly for military missions, such as surveillance, intelligence gathering and special operations, but also in high-tech scientific applications.
It has still not become known how the unmanned surface vessel in question ended up in Greek waters and as a result concerns circulating in the Greek media that the USV contains explosives or was lost during an international defense exercise are speculation.
