New details have emerged in the murder investigation of Stavroula Leventaki in Chania, Crete, with authorities revealing that forensic evidence played a key role in identifying the suspect before his confession.
The 43-year-old tenant of a business owned by the victim attempted to cover up traces of the crime, but investigators found blood evidence inside his home in Varypetro, Chania, which helped link him to the case.
According to police, the discovery of blood traces through forensic analysis became the turning point in the investigation.
Special forensic technique revealed hidden blood traces
Investigators used Bluestar, a forensic chemical solution that can reveal traces of blood that are not visible to the naked eye.
When combined with specialized lighting, the substance reacts with the iron in hemoglobin and produces a blue glow, allowing experts to identify possible blood traces on surfaces.
Authorities reportedly found traces in several areas of the suspect’s home, including a wardrobe and the handle of a broom, despite efforts to clean the scene.
The head of the Chania Police Directorate said the forensic examination was a crucial element in solving the case. The 43-year-old suspect is expected to appear before judicial authorities on Tuesday, June 23.
Suspect’s claims under investigation
During his statement, the suspect claimed that a heated argument had taken place between him and Leventaki. He also said that they had previously been in a relationship and that the victim wanted to reconnect, a claim authorities are reportedly examining with caution.
Investigators continue to evaluate all available evidence as the legal process moves forward.
Autopsy findings reveal cause of death
A forensic examination carried out by medical examiner Stamatis Belivanis found that Leventaki suffered multiple injuries.
According to the findings, the injuries to her head were the cause of death, while the knife wounds allegedly admitted by the suspect were superficial and did not penetrate the chest area.
The examination indicated that the stab wounds were not fatal.
Investigation into the attack
According to information from the investigation, the 43-year-old admitted that he initially struck Leventaki in the head with a bottle.
Authorities say he then allegedly used tape to cover her mouth when she attempted to call for help and stabbed her in the chest.
The suspect reportedly believed she had died and left the scene temporarily. Investigators say that when he later realized she was still alive, he allegedly struck her again in the head with a wooden object, causing fatal injuries.
