A female British tourist says that she “almost lost her ear” on account of a spider bite that was not properly treated by a medical professional on the island of Rhodes.

Speaking to British tabloid the Mirror, 20-year-old Halle Hizer relates that she had a weeklong trip on Rhodes with her grandmother in June, during which time she woke up with a swollen ear.

Hizer thought that the swelling was connected with her air pods, which she wore during the flight to Greece, until her ear swelled up “like a cauliflower”.

“We went for a week just to relax and it ended up becoming a horror show. I woke up and my ear was really swollen. At the time I didn’t think anything of it. I just thought it was a case of when you wear your air pods for too long and it was rubbing on my ear when it can hurt sometimes,” she told the Mirror.

Hizer’s grandmother urged her to eventually see a doctor on the island, who gave her antibiotics for an ear infection. Following the antibiotics- and a 155 euro medical bill- Hizer relates that the infection just got worse, leading her to visit another doctor when she returned to Enfield, North London.

The medical doctor back in the UK explained that the antibiotics prescribed in Greece have been out of circulation in the UK for years because they are not effective. The doctor was forced to remove the abcess through surgery and confirmed that Hizer had been bitten by a spider.

Hizer documented the issue on TikTok, which has since gone viral, showing images of her swollen ear, dripping with pus and eventual surgery back in the UK.

The young traveller is on the mend but relates that she has a new fear of spiders after the ordeal. Moreover, she is frustrated by the fact that, if she had been given the correct antibiotics in the first place, the infection would have been addressed, sparing her much pain and even a surgery.
