A dramatic incident unfolded inside the Naousa Court of First Instance in northern Greece’s Veria region, when a chandelier suddenly detached from the ceiling during a court session and fell directly onto a lawyer.
Speaking to Greek broadcaster MEGA, attorney Sofia Zeibeki said she was extremely fortunate not to be injured, as the heavy light fixture crashed down right next to her and shattered on impact.
“I was so lucky that I can’t even believe it. Yesterday was a day that left me shocked. I didn’t expect to be this lucky. It fell right on me, the light fixture broke apart and I wasn’t hurt at all. I walked away completely unharmed during an ongoing court hearing,” she said.
She also described the condition of the court facilities as “appalling,” noting that the Naousa court building was previously a smalll claims court upgraded to a court of first instance without the necessary renovations being carried out. According to her, the lighting fixtures in the courtrooms are in a visibly deteriorated state.
“The presiding judge was startled and shocked, and afterwards came down to see how I was. Of course, the courtroom was full, as trials were proceeding normally. It wasn’t just me and the judge present. There were also fellow lawyers. Fortunately, no one was injured,” she added.
