A significant expansion in air travel between Greece and China is set to take effect this year, with daily flights scheduled between Athens and Shanghai from September, marking a new phase in connectivity between the two countries.
The development comes as Juneyao Airlines increases its operations on the Athens–Shanghai Pudong route, which was first launched on 2 April 2024 with three weekly flights. Since then, the service has steadily expanded in response to growing demand.
Rapid growth in passenger traffic
During the 2026 summer season, the route will operate six times per week before becoming a daily service from 25 September, completing the transition to a full seven-flights-per-week schedule.
According to available data, the route has experienced a 56% year-on-year increase in passenger traffic. This growth is attributed to sustained demand for travel between Greece and China, both for tourism and business purposes.
Strengthening tourism and business links
The expanded air link is expected to further enhance tourism flows while also facilitating closer economic cooperation. Shanghai, one of China’s main commercial hubs, plays a central role in international business, making direct connectivity with Athens strategically important.
