Greek customs authorities have seized €500,000 in undeclared cash from a passenger arriving at Athens International Airport from Dubai, according to the country’s Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE).

The money was discovered during a routine customs inspection carried out as part of daily monitoring procedures at the country’s entry points.

According to AADE, officials stopped a Greek national shortly before he exited the arrivals area for passengers arriving from outside the Schengen zone.

During an inspection of his carry-on luggage, customs officers found €500,000 in bundles of €500 banknotes. Authorities said the passenger had not submitted the required electronic or written declaration for transporting large amounts of cash, as mandated under current regulations.

AADE said its inspectors maintain a continuous presence at the country’s entry and exit points, carrying out both routine and targeted checks aimed at preventing and combating violations linked to cross-border movements.
