One day after a prosecutor recommended that all four police officers who were on duty the night of Kyriakis Griva’s murder face trial, the father of the slain young woman spoke to ERT, the Greek public broadcaster.
The prosecutor filed a motion with the judicial council requesting that all four defendants be indicted on charges of fatal exposure by a person under obligation, by omission.
“If they had done what they were supposed to do, my daughter would be alive. They didn’t do the bare minimum of their job,” said Thanasis Grivas.
Commenting specifically on the role the officers played at the time of the crime, Thanasis Grivas added: “They gave the perpetrator all the time and all the space to act.” He maintained that had the necessary steps been taken from the moment his daughter went to the police station, the tragedy could have been prevented.
Reflecting on the conduct of those involved, he noted that only one officer, a special guard stationed at the exterior post, had come to him and apologized: “He came to the courthouse and told me, ‘I made a mistake.'”
Kyriakis’s father said he has faith in the justice system and called for the harshest possible sentence for those responsible: “They should be punished with the maximum penalty. It should serve as a deterrent.” He welcomed the prosecutor’s motion to indict them on felony-level charges.
He was careful to clarify that he is not targeting the Greek Police as an institution, acknowledging that there are officers who put their lives on the line every day: “There are people in the police who have given their lives. And there are others who tarnish the force.”
“I’ve lost my child. The least that can happen is that those responsible are punished as they deserve,” he said.
