A fire broke out at the Volos Prison in central Greece on Tuesday afternoon, following a violent altercation among inmates. The incident left four people hospitalized and prompted a significant emergency response.
According to local reports, the clash occurred inside a cell block of the prison, located at the end of Metamorfoseos Street in the city of Volos. During the confrontation, some inmates reportedly set a mattress on fire, quickly filling the area with thick smoke.
Emergency services were called to the scene at approximately 6:30 p.m. Firefighters from the Volos Fire Department arrived with four fire engines and two emergency vehicles, mobilizing a total of 13 personnel to contain the blaze before it could spread further.
Prison staff also intervened to assist with the situation. Three correctional officers were hospitalized after inhaling smoke while attempting to help evacuate the affected area. They were transferred to the Volos General Hospital as a precaution. Medical officials later confirmed that none of the injuries are life-threatening.
The situation inside the prison has since been brought under control, but a strong police presence remains on site to ensure continued order and security.
