A fire alarm was raised Monday morning at Athens Towers, after smoke was reported in the underground parking area of its second building in the central district of Ampelokipi. Office workers and companies were promptly evacuated as thick smoke filled the entrance, creating suffocating conditions.
Eighteen firefighters with four engines responded to the incident, inspecting the building to locate the source of the smoke. However, as of late morning, authorities said no active flames or specific ignition point had been found.
The Athens Tower complex, completed in 1971, consists of two buildings that have long been among the city’s most recognizable landmarks. Tower 1 is 103 meters tall and 28 storeys high, making it the tallest building in Greece. Located on Mesogeion Avenue, it houses major Greek companies and remains a symbol of modernist architecture in the capital.
