A German tourist was found unconscious with multiple injuries on Monday morning in the Diktamos Gorge, in the Chania region on the northwestern coast of Crete, according to public broadcaster ERT.

A large-scale rescue operation was launched at 11:15 a.m., but strong winds—already sweeping through the area since Sunday—prevented the use of a helicopter for his immediate evacuation to Chania General Hospital.

This latest incident follows another hiking-related tragedy earlier this month, when a 60-year-old German woman lost her life after falling in a remote and rugged area on Mount Olympus, Greece’s highest mountain.

Diktamos Gorge begins about 21 kilometers east of Chania, near the village of Katochori at an altitude of 300 meters, and stretches roughly 8 kilometers to the village of Faraggi, near Stylos, descending to 40 meters above sea level. The hike through the gorge typically takes around three hours and is considered moderately challenging, with several steep sections and parts that require climbing.
