The Holy Light began its journey across Greece, arriving at 7:30 p.m. at Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos aboard a government aircraft from Jerusalem. As every year, it was received with full state honors.
Parliament Speaker Nikitas Kaklamanis attended the reception ceremony at the Athens airport, while a military guard of honor paid tribute. Among those present were the Markopoulo Philharmonic Band, which performed the national anthem, the Greek Scouts, the Pontian Association of Lavrio carrying an icon of the Resurrection, and the Asia Minor Association of Rafina, among others.
Leading the Greek delegation was Deputy Foreign Minister Yiannis Loverdos, who said the mission had been particularly challenging due to the conditions in the Middle East.
The Holy Light will once again be transported from Athens to the rest of the country through scheduled and special flights operated by Aegean Airlines and Olympic Air. The airlines have arranged additional flights to 18 destinations across Greece to ensure its delivery to worshippers nationwide.
For security reasons, the Greek mission consisted of three members. The Holy Light was transported to Athens by the head of the delegation and government representative, Deputy Foreign Minister responsible for diaspora affairs Yiannis Loverdos, along with the Exarch of the Holy Sepulchre in Athens and a representative of the Holy Synod.
