Greek police have dismantled a criminal network involved in the distribution of illegal anabolic substances and unapproved dietary supplements in the northern city of Thessaloniki, authorities announced on Friday.
Three suspects — a 61-year-old father and his two children, aged 36 and 31 — were arrested following a coordinated operation by the organized crime unit. The individuals, who are related, are facing felony charges and have been referred to an investigating judge.
Gym Used as Front for Illegal Sales
According to police, the group operated a gym and retail space that allegedly served as a front for selling the illegal products. In addition to in-person sales, the suspects are said to have used a website to promote and distribute the substances to customers.
Authorities believe the products were primarily marketed to athletes seeking to enhance performance, particularly ahead of or during competitions.
Public Health Concerns
Investigators also found that the suspects were distributing dietary supplements that had not been approved by the national medicines authority, raising serious concerns about consumer safety.
Large Quantities Seized
Searches carried out at homes, the gym premises, and a vehicle led to the seizure of large quantities of illegal substances, including:
- Over 1,200 anabolic capsules and tablets
- More than 300 injectable anabolic vials
- Additional pharmaceutical products in both capsule and injectable form
- Nearly 16 kilograms of unapproved powdered supplements
- Thousands of additional supplement capsules and tablets
Police also confiscated cash, documents, invoices, mobile phones, and weapons, including an air pistol and a blank-firing revolver. A small quantity of cannabis was also found.
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the extent of the network’s activities, including its customer base and potential links to broader distribution channels.
