Greek authorities are investigating a drug trafficking operation after a 22-year-old Spanish woman was arrested at Heraklion Airport in Crete with almost 20 kilograms of cannabis hidden in her luggage.
The woman arrived in Heraklion early Thursday morning on a charter flight from Barcelona, where she had checked in the suitcase containing two vacuum-sealed packages of cannabis weighing 11.1 kilograms and 8 kilograms respectively.
According to investigators, the drugs were a high-potency cannabis variety known as Skunk, reportedly produced through hydroponic cultivation, with an estimated value of around €80,000.
Police officers from the Heraklion Narcotics Department were waiting for her at the airport after receiving information about the suspected transport. They identified her based only on available details and arrested her shortly after she arrived.
Suspect Acted as Drug Courier
Authorities believe the 22-year-old had the role of a courier in the operation. Investigators say she had travelled to Crete carrying only the clothes she was wearing and was expected to hand over the suitcase before returning to Barcelona the following day.
When police located the luggage, the woman refused to provide the security code needed to open it, claiming that it had been given to her sealed and that she did not know what it contained.
Officers eventually opened the suitcase and found the two packages containing the cannabis, which were reportedly the only items inside.
Mobile Phone May Provide Key Evidence
Investigators are focusing on the woman’s mobile phone, which they believe could provide important information about the suspected trafficking network and the route used to transport the drugs.
Authorities are examining data from the device and have reportedly identified another Spanish national, known as Max, who is believed to have directed the woman’s actions.
Police are investigating whether the case is linked to a wider, well-organized international criminal network involved in drug distribution.
The suspect was taken before the relevant prosecutor, while the Heraklion Narcotics Department continues the investigation.
