The local community in Marathon is in shock after the chilling discovery that an elderly woman had been buried in her own backyard for nearly a decade. According to initial reports, her daughter buried her in the garden in order to keep illegally collecting her pension, as she admitted to authorities.
Police investigations are ongoing, with municipal excavators working alongside police forces, though nothing has been found so far and the search continues.
Accounts from people who lived near the family paint a picture of complete isolation. “We’re in shock, they weren’t quite right, they only went out at night,” said one resident living across from the house, describing a family that had cut off all contact with the outside world.
“I Never Saw Her – They Were Very Closed-Off People”
“Leaving for work in the morning, I saw bulldozers, police, and a loader digging. They told us they were looking for an elderly woman in the garden. I’ve lived here ten years and never saw her. If something like this happened, it clearly happened before that.”
“They Had Psychological Issues, They Only Went Out at Night”
The neighbor also described the family’s unusual behavior, stressing how completely cut off they were from the neighborhood:
“Generally they had no contact with any of the neighbors. They only went out in the evening, even walking their dog at night. As far as I can tell, they had some psychological issues, they weren’t quite right in the head. We’re genuinely in shock, we don’t know what’s happening.”
According to reports, other neighbors told police the woman was alive in 2013, but they lost track of her after that.
