Μake us preferred on Google Giorgos Mazonakis had not prepared a will before his death, despite being advised to do so following his hospitalization at Dromokaiteio psychiatric hospital in Athens in 2025, according to his lawyer and friend Giorgos Merkoulidis.
Merkoulidis, who spoke exclusively to Greek television station MEGA, said Mazonakis contacted him on August 25, just days before his death, asking to discuss an unspecified matter.
“I was shocked by the tragic way Giorgos died, but for about nine months I had absolutely no involvement with Giorgos, either as a lawyer or otherwise. On August 25, he called me. I was on vacation. He told me he wanted to discuss something with me. I told him that when I returned, I would call him. Unfortunately, I did not make it in time,” Merkoulidis said.
Mazonakis’ experience at Dromokaiteio
Merkoulidis also spoke about his legal representation of Mazonakis during the singer’s hospitalization at Dromokaiteio around August 15, 2025, saying the experience had deeply affected him.
“I was his legal representative at the time, during the ordeal with Dromokaiteio, on the eve of August 15, 2025. It affected him deeply,” he said.
According to Merkoulidis, however, the public’s response during that period became an important source of strength for the singer.
“Giorgos had not realized the love and support of the public that was expressed in all its magnitude during that period, and this truly made him stronger, even though he was full of bitterness and anger over the whole matter of his hospitalization,” he said.
“He came out of this ordeal very strong because he saw the support and love of the public, the magnitude and extent of which he had not realized,” he added.
Lawyer discusses upgraded charges against doctors
Merkoulidis also commented on the prosecutor’s decision to upgrade the charges against the doctors in connection with Mazonakis’ death to homicide with possible intent.
He described the development as “very correct” and explained the legal meaning of possible intent.
“Possible intent has specific elements. It means that you foresee the outcome as possible and accept it. You do not seek it, but you accept it. That is the difference,” he said.
The two doctors facing charges in connection with Mazonakis’ death have previously denied wrongdoing.
Mazonakis had not signed a will
Merkoulidis said he had advised Mazonakis to prepare a will after his experience at Dromokaiteio, but the singer did not believe there was an immediate reason to do so.
“Giorgos did not have a will. And, in fact, after the experience at Dromokaiteio, I suggested to him that he should prepare a will,” Merkoulidis said.
Mazonakis, he said, did not believe he would die soon.
“Giorgos did not believe he would leave this life. He said to me, ‘Is it possible for me to prepare a will already? I will die at a very old age.’ I told him, Giorgos, this is not a matter of age,” Merkoulidis recalled.
According to the lawyer, Mazonakis had instructed him to prepare an initial draft that could then be taken to a notary.
“He had instructed me to prepare an initial draft so that we could go to a notary, but we never went and he never signed it,” Merkoulidis said.
