Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis expressed his deep sorrow following the fatal collision of two leased firefighting helicopters in Psatha, which claimed the lives of two crew members during wildfire suppression operations.
In a statement, Mitsotakis said he was “deeply saddened” by the tragedy, describing the victims as “two frontline fighters” in the battle against wildfires under extremely challenging weather conditions, particularly for aerial firefighting crews.
“The loss of the Greek coordinator and the Danish pilot while they were operating over the major wildfire in Porto Germeno fills us all with grief,” the prime minister said.
He also extended his sincere condolences to the families of the two men.
Earlier on Sunday, Mitsotakis visited the Civil Protection Operations and Crisis Management Coordination Center to receive an update on the progress of firefighting operations as wildfires continued to burn in several parts of Greece.
